The Problem
Health-conscious individuals with lack of knowledge & unfamiliarity are often overwhelmed by the abundance of Indian Spices & ingredients & struggle to find their effective use in cuisines & health care. Users are concerned & curious about the health issues associated with additives, preservatives & chemicals used in processed foods & daily products, but unsure where to begin.
The Goal
Through the research process, the objectives are to...
Demystify the health benefits, flavor, and uses of Indian spices and ingredients
Provide simple and easy to make recipes for users to choose from
Alleviate the overwhelming nature of trying to learn something new on your own

User Insights
Getting to know our user…
"No. But Yes I would love to learn about them. I am very health conscious & what is better than “taste with health”! Also i've heard that they don't have side effects on human body if used effectively”

“I try to meal prep, i buy organic foods, and foods with a low glycemic index, check ingredients to see if they have inflammatory stuff, cheap oils used in foods, and i work out”

“Greater access to more affordable ingredients because cooking is fun, it’s just expensive, and spices alone are pretty expensive. And If I knew more about the spices then I would try to cook a variety of foods instead of just sticking to what I know”

Through conducting our in-person user interviews. We wanted to focus on defining our focus through research. We found that
a lot of our users try to be health conscious in their day-to-day lives but find it difficult due to inaccessible information.
Affinity Map
After gathering insights from our 5 interviewees, we started synthesizing…

Through organizing our insights and re-categorizing information by affinity mapping, we were able to gain valuable insight and define our focus. We gathered that health is a big deal in our user's lives and a big part of health comes from what you put into your body. Our users like Indian food but are generally unaware of its functional uses and its variety of health benefits. Some of their pain points include wanting to learn but find information to be overwhelming and inaccessible
Research and Ideation
Analyzing our user
Competitive Analysis
Analyzing what's already on the market…

After conducting a competitor analysis on any apps on the market similar to our product, we found that our idea was relatively unique. While there did exist a variety of Indian cooking apps for users interested in specific recipes, there were none that centered spices and education. Through this analysis of direct and indirect competitors we did find that some accessibility, and weaknesses. Some advantages were the fact that the apps were very informative and visually appealing.
Empathy Map
Bringing our user to life…

We started off creating our user by getting to know them a little better. We wrote out things our user would say, think, feel, things they like and also dislike. This really helped us center our user and really empathize with the people we are building this app for.
User Persona
Meet Amaya Jacobs…

After creating our empathy map, we were able to fully flesh out a persona that we felt represented our users. Meet Amaya jacobs. Amaya is a 42 year old senior analyst who has always wanted to learn to cook Indian cuisine, but never tried because she felt as though the spices and ingredients were too unfamiliar and overwhelming. She strives for a healthy lifestyle and needs ways to simplify cooking Indian food at home without feeling too overwhelmed with her own limited knowledge.
User Flow
Creating a happy path for Amaya…

Now that we understand our user's hesitations and goals, we created a user flow that includes Amaya's happy path for using the app.

Feature prioritization
Narrowing down and pinpointing our apps features…

We made an I Like, I Wish, What if? diagram and dot voted on the features we wanted to include in the app. We then took those we voted on and re-organized the cards into a feature prioritization diagram to ensure that the features we were choosing to implement were mostly original and easy to implement. Based on our results from the diagram we decided to include features that offered informative content that centered the health uses of Indian spices, and easy to cook recipes.
Paper Prototype
starting to construct our app …

When desiging our paper prototype we made sure to be very intentional and keep our user in mind. We wanted to ensure an easy onboarding process that also showed care for its users by asking their prefered dietary preferences. We made sure to keep the UI very simple to keep users from getting overwhelmed.
Mid-Fi Wireframes
creating the blueprint for our app…

Final Prototype
Seeing the product come to life

During the testing phase of our wireframes. We improved upon and iterated the flow and color palette for the app. Originally we planned to use a darker purple, but given user feedback and doing further research on soothing colors we decided to go with a lilac. Muted colors add to a camling user experience and given that this is an app that focuses on education it will help users process information easier.
